The expanding oil and gas industry is providing rich pickings for global recruiters Hays. The company are set to open operations in Houston, Texas, a move linked to the volume of business the company are receiving from this sector. The final operation is forecast to be a 5 to 10-person office from which the company will seek to expand its energy sector customer base.
While the oil and gas industry represents less than 10 percent of Hays current customer base it is hoped this percentage will increase over the next years. According to Hays North America President John Faraguna, the location of this new office will be crucial to the company's strategic placing within this part of the recruitment business: “We have a good business in oil and gas. But to be a global service provider in oil and gas, you have to be in Houston,” he said. “The economy in Houston is great, oil and gas is strong. So it’s an attractive place for us.”
Recruitment is already underway for new professionals to join Hays, with the company looking for individuals with expertise in field engineering, reservoir engineering, geology, project management, refining and chemicals.
The office will be Hays' second US branch, joining the existing operation just outside Manhattan, which is focused largely on employment in pharmaceuticals and biotech. The firm hopes to help new customers understand pay structure, recruitment trends, and how to attract employees in foreign markets.
“If you are new, you don’t have a brand in the market place. The local people probably don’t know you and they wouldn’t come to you naturally if they are looking for a job,” he said. “That’s one of the roles we play. In the countries where we work, people know Hays.”
