Innovantage Demand Barometer shows online ads increase.

At c.2.22m in May 2018, the number of original job ads captured by Innovantage was 4.5 per cent higher than a year earlier, 11.8 per cent lower than in May 2016 (in the run-up to the EU referendum) and 18.3 per cent higher than three years ago. 

  • In addition, 0.60m reposts of previous adverts were captured - suggesting that the role was unfilled via the original post and/or it was a role that an employer continually advertises. This equated to 27 per cent of the volume of original ads posted. 
  • At 2.9m, the combined total of original job ads and reposts was 5 per cent lower than a year earlier, 13 per cent lower than April 2016 but 25 per cent higher than 3 years ago.

Set into context of the most recent total number of UK workforce jobs (35.2m in March 2018), the workforce jobs total was just 0.5 per cent (192k) higher than a year earlier, 2.2 per cent (759k) higher than in March 2016 and 3.8 per cent (1,278k) higher than 3 years earlier.

 

And set in context of the official ONS vacancy number for the quarter ending May 2018 (818k), UK vacancy numbers were 4.2 per cent higher than the figure one year earlier, 9.9 per cent higher than in March-May 2016 and 12.7 per cent higher than 3 years ago. 

 

The ratio of original job postings to official vacancies was 2.7 to 1 in May 2018:

  • This was the same ratio as one a year earlier, down from 3.4 to 1 in May 2016 (in the run-up to the EU-referendum) but up from 2.6 three years ago. 

The ratio of total ads (including reposts) to official vacancies was 3.5 to 1:

  • This was down from 3.7 to 1 in May 2017, significantly lower than the ratio of 4.3 to 1 in May 2016 but up from 3.3 to 1 three years ago.
