Search Engine Optimisation, most commonly referred to as SEO, is the art of increasing the quantity and quality of traffic to your website through organic search engine results.

An Optimistic Return

A Randstad survey of over 27,000 workers in 34 countries has found a clear desire for em-ployees to return to the workplace, but not without having the vaccine first. According to the recruiter, until a return to work is possible, feelings of isolation, the inability to strike a healthy work/life balance and the longing for personal connections are concerns cited by a majority of workers. Indeed, 52 per cent of Brits mention missing in-person interaction with colleagues, and one in five stated that productivity has been affected negatively due to difficulties associated with working remotely.

And you Are?

In recent years, the use of fake qualifications to dupe recruiters and hiring managers has skyrocketed. Last year, the BBC revealed that tens of thousands of people in the UK had purchased fake undergraduate and PhD degrees through institutions in Pakistan, known as diploma mills. Buyers included NHS consultants, nurses, and one large defence contractor. Already in the news this year is a former NHS boss in Oxford receiving a suspended prison sentence after claiming a false university degree, and a senior radiologist who was removed from his post after lying about being a qualified GP.

Award Winners

On Thursday 14th October, The Global Recruiter was finally able to reward and recognise the best of the recruitment industry once again. The Global Recruiter UK Industry Awards were not able to go ahead last year due to the impact of the pandemic. However, they were back better than ever last week, set within a new venue at East Wintergardens, Canary Wharf, London and headline sponsored by MIT Employee Engagement.

Awards Deadline Approaches

After a year and more of disruption, lockdowns and a global pandemic it is, at last, time to take stock and celebrate. The Global Recruiter Industry Awards have returned, bringing with them a chance for the industry to demonstrate the good it has delivered, for recruiters to show exactly how much they have achieved and for recruitment businesses to show how they have worked for the good of their clients and candidates.

Awards Reward

It’s time for recruitment businesses up and down the country to put their best foot forward and show what they can do. The Global Recruiter UK Industry Awards, headline sponsored by Simplicity, is launching, lining up the very best awards, the industry’s own awards, ready to recognise the great and good of the recruitment industry.

Awards Shortlist Announced

The time has finally come, the selections have finally been made. After a year of disruption, The Global Recruiter UK Industry Awards, headline sponsored by MIT Employee Engagement, are backed. The entries have been judged and the shortlist drawn up. These companies are all remarkable and have demonstrated the amazing performance of the recruitment sector over the past 18 months and more. Despite a global pandemic, in the face of uncertainty and incredible challenge these companies have shown how resilient the recruitment industry is, how dedicated recruiters are and how recruitment businesses can still push forward even when times are hard.

Back to the workplace

A successful return to the workplace is the priority for employers right now. As lockdowns begin to lift for different groups of workers across the world, it’s anything but business as usual. It’s important to remember that a post-lockdown return to the workplace isn’t an event, it’s a process. It is estimated that 2.7 billion people, 80% of the global workforce, have been affected by COVID-19-related lockdowns. Their safe return is a complex challenge that employers around the world are facing.

Be Clear

Research commissioned by Reed.co.uk has found that four in five (78 per cent) jobseekers are less likely to apply for a job vacancy that does not display a salary. The recruitment company believes that current labour shortages and a cost of living crisis means a culture of salary secrecy is limiting hiring managers' ability to secure the best talent. The research also revealed that more than one in five (22 per cent) jobseekers exclusively apply for jobs with a listed salary, but recruiters have admitted that they still either don’t include the salary, or only sometimes include it, on nearly half (44 per cent) of all job ads.

Be compliant with your KIDS

In April 2020, the government introduced the Key Information Document for all agency workers. Budget Reaction

Responding to Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s budget announcement today, Tania Bowers, Legal Counsel and Head of Public Policy for the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo), said: “The extension of the furlough scheme and the announcement of a new recovery loan scheme to replace the Bounce Back support is welcome news that we believe will help strengthen the UK’s employment market. As APSCo has highlighted before, though, access to aid such as this needs to be simplified and fast tracked.

Budget Reaction

Responding to the budget, Neil Carberry, chief executive of the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC), said: “The Chancellor’s commitment to supporting the economy through the crisis has been welcome, and today’s announcement of extensions to this support is good news for the business community and for job creation. We’re pleased to see extensions to the furlough scheme, the deferral period for VAT and business rates.

Budget Reaction

The CIPD has welcomed the extension to the furlough scheme, saying it represents a lifeline to many businesses and workers. However, it warns the government must now start to shift gears and move from its focus from job protection to greater investment in skills and supporting jobseekers.  “The extension of furlough to the end of September will be a huge relief to businesses and workers across the UK,” said Peter Cheese, chief executive of the CIPD, “while gradual tapering of the wage subsidy from July will help avoid a ‘cliff edge’ end to support and protect thousands of jobs.

Budget Reaction

In response to the Budget and spending review, Deputy CEO of the Recruitment & Employment Confederation Kate Shoesmith said: "The Chancellor said today was about preparing for a new economy. To really deliver on that, what we need to see from government is a long-term, strategic vision for the whole UK workforce. Businesses up and down the country are battling labour and skills shortages. They need the right levers to enable the right type of investment in workforce development and growth - only that growth can make wage rises sustainable and improve the public finances long-term. That means ensuring businesses have the financial headroom and incentives to invest here in the UK, as well as the skills support that is needed.

CEST – Help or Hindrance?

In April 2021, the off-payroll working legislation ("OPW"), or "IR35 reforms", rolled out to the private sector. The IR35 rules mean that if the worker is "Inside IR35", then payments made to their limited company must be treated as employment income, just like a salary. The updated rules introduced specific changes, including the Status Determination Statement ("SDS") and debt transfer provisions. Hence, the tax liability ultimately sticks with the client if the rest of the supply chain can't pay the tax bill.

Compliance Side

In recent years work status compliance issues have rarely far from a Chancellor’s statement and this year's Autumn initiative was no exception. Dave Chaplin, CEO of IR35 Shield gave his assessment of the ideas and initiatives introduced: "Jeremy Hunt today claims he focused on growth. If he is so focused on growing the economy, he should have unshackled the UK's flexible self-employed workforce by repealing the unworkable and deeply flawed Off-payroll legislation,” said Chaplin. "The Tories failed the self-employed by allowing HMRC to push the damaging off-payroll reforms through Parliament, which harmed the people who facilitated growth and gave the UK an edge.

Crawford Temple is CEO of Professional Passport, the largest independent assessor of intermediary compliance and here he outlines what a compliant umbrella firm should be providing.
