In recruitment, H2 often arrives with a mix of excitement and pressure. Targets can feel bigger, markets can become more competitive and many recruiters start to doubt themselves if the first half of the year didn’t go to plan.
But here’s the truth: champions aren’t made when everything is easy. They’re made in the moments when they choose a different mindset. I think AMS would agree with their sale to Korn Ferry!
One of the biggest performance killers isn’t market conditions, candidate shortages or difficult hiring managers. It’s the conversation happening in your own head.
The difference between high performers and everyone else is rarely talent alone. It’s their ability to reframe challenges into opportunities.
Instead of saying, “I can’t fill this role,” ask yourself, “How can I fill this role?”
That single word change moves your brain from defeat to problem-solving.
The same principle applies every day.
Instead of:
- “The market is dead.”
Try:
- “Where is the opportunity others are missing?”
Instead of:
- “This client never gives feedback.”
Try:
- “What conversation do I need to have to change this relationship?”
Instead of:
- “Candidates keep ghosting me.”
Try:
- “What can I improve in my communication that keeps candidates engaged?”
The brain is incredibly good at finding evidence for whatever question you ask it. If you ask, “Why is recruitment so difficult?” you’ll find plenty of answers. If you ask, “What’s one thing I can do differently today?” you’ll start seeing possibilities instead of obstacles.
This doesn’t mean ignoring reality or pretending challenges don’t exist. It means taking ownership of the part you can control.
A practical exercise is to catch your inner dialogue throughout the day. Every time you hear yourself say “I can’t”, “They won’t”, or “It’s impossible”, pause and replace it with one of these questions:
- What can I influence?
- What’s another way?
- Who could help?
- What’s the next best action?
- What would a top performer do right now?
These questions shift you from emotion to action.
As we enter H2, remember that the leaderboard hasn’t been written yet. Deals can still be won. Relationships can still be strengthened. Habits can still be changed.
The recruiters who finish the year strongest won’t necessarily be those who had the best H1. They’ll be the ones who refused to let negative thinking dictate their performance.
Because performance isn’t just about activity.
It’s about potential minus interference.
And often, the biggest interference is the story we tell ourselves.
This H2, change the story and you may just change your results.
