Are Backdoor Hires on the rise?

Backdoor hires can be a plague to any recruitment business.

Most will be familiar with the term, but it’s where you’ve made an introduction to a client and they’ve taken your candidate inside the ownership period, avoiding the due fee!

Most small businesses have this under control, with tight relationships and an easy to manage candidate base.

As a company scales and is sending over 10,000 CVs a year, the issue gets worse.

Our data shows for recruiters above a headcount of 50 and sending over 10,000 CVs, 1 in every 912 introductions results in a backdoor hire.

Construction and Engineering has the worst of it, with a whopping 1 in 544 introductions resulting in an avoided fee.

It’s all well and good hearing about what might be happening under your nose, but what can be done about it?

Some quick tips:

  • Allow a senior person to handle it in legal or a managing director, with a soft approach at first as this could have been an accident, this allows it to come from a place of authority and allow a quick win in the case of accidental breach, with no harm done to relations
  • Have a nailed out detection process, most will do this manually, but automated is the best option

Illumini’s purpose is to fill the gap for recruiters who know they may have a problem, but no surefire way of detecting backdoor hires and no idea to the actual extent of the issue and the waste that is occurring.
