The Balance Trick: Before You Plan Next Year, Take a Look at This One

As we head towards the end of another year, there’s a familiar conversation happening across recruitment businesses.

Did we hit target? What did we bill? What worked? What didn’t? And, of course, what’s the plan for next year?

After more than 20 years in recruitment, from top biller to running my own business, I know those conversations well.

But there’s one question we rarely ask.

How’s the rest of your life going?

Because you can have your best billing year ever and still feel absolutely exhausted. You can be smashing targets while your relationships, health or happiness quietly take a back seat.

I know. I’ve been there.

We spend so much time measuring performance at work, but when was the last time you measured how well your life was working?

That’s why I created the Life Audit.

It’s a simple exercise that asks you to look at different areas of your life and give each one an honest score.

Not the score you think you should give it. The real one.

How’s your health? Your energy? Your relationships? Your finances? Are you having any fun? Or has life become one long to-do list with the occasional holiday thrown in?

And here’s the interesting bit.

You might discover that the thing you’ve been chasing all year isn’t actually the thing that needs your attention.

Perhaps you don’t need another promotion. Perhaps you need more sleep.

Perhaps you don’t need to work harder. Perhaps you need to put your phone down and spend some time with the people you love.

Or perhaps everything is going brilliantly. That’s worth recognising too.

The Life Audit isn’t about making you feel guilty or telling you to overhaul your entire life. It’s about seeing the bigger picture and deciding where a few small changes could make a real difference.

So before you start writing your 2027 business plan, setting ambitious targets and promising yourself that this will be the year you finally get organised, take 10 minutes for yourself.

Stop measuring just your performance. Start looking at your life.

And if you’d like a little more help getting your life back into balance, I’ve written a book about it.

The Balance Trick: One Life. Twenty Ways to Fix It.

Yes, apparently I had quite a lot to say on the subject. 😂

The book is available to buy on Amazon.
