Four astronauts launched from Kennedy Space Center on Artemis II, the first crewed mission to the Moon in over 50 years.
Here’s the bit most people don’t realise: NASA spends as much time studying the team as they do the rocket. Because when people are under pressure, isolated, and stretched performance doesn’t just dip, it breaks down. And it doesn’t matter how talented the individuals are.
We often talk about high-performing teams as if it’s about skills, experience, strong leadership and communication.
But that’s not what holds things together when it matters. NASA found the real differentiator was something simpler: Shared mental models.
A shared understanding of:
- what’s happening
- what matters
- who is doing what
- and how we’re thinking about it
Not just communication, alignment. Because here’s the thing most teams miss:
You can’t get into flow as a team if everyone is operating from a different picture. Flow isn’t just about being focused individually. It’s about reduced friction, clear roles, trust and knowing how to move together without overthinking. That only happens when everyone is on the same page.
In high-pressure environments (and recruitment is one of them), the cost of misalignment is huge:
- duplicated work
- missed deadlines
- frustration
- unnecessary stress
Not because people aren’t capable but because they’re not aligned. And this is where most teams try to fix it by doing more meetings, messages, check-ins. But more noise doesn’t create clarity.
What actually works is much simpler:
- Clear priorities (not long lists)
- Defined roles (who owns what)
- A shared understanding of what “done” looks like
- Space to think, not just react
And one thing that gets overlooked completely:
State.
You can have the best plan in the world, but if your team is stressed, overwhelmed and constantly “on”. They won’t access clear thinking. They won’t access flow.
This is where something as simple as breathwork comes in. Not as a “wellness add-on” but as a performance tool.
Because when you regulate the nervous system:
- thinking becomes clearer
- reactions slow down
- people listen properly
- decisions improve
And suddenly, the team can actually use the shared framework they’ve created. A high-performing team isn’t just aligned on paper, they create flow.
So if you’re looking to improve performance in your team, don’t start with more pressure.
Start with clarity, alignment and creating the conditions where people can actually think and work well together.
Because when that’s in place… Performance doesn’t feel forced. It flows.
